Sun Yat-sen book collection goes on display
About 200 books collected by Dr Sun Yat-sen will be shown to the public for the first time at the former residence of the revered revolutionary.
The exhibition will open on Tuesday and will last three months at his former home on Xiangshan Road in Huangpu District.
The operator of the residence, which is now a memorial hall of Sun's life, said the center has about 5,000 books that were owned by Sun and the display is just a small part of his collection.
"Sun was addicted to reading and it was his only pastime," said Liu Jinchi, the hall’s curator.
Liu said Sun often visited bookstores on Sichuan Rd N. and Fuzhou Road. He also purchased many of his books in Japan, Liu said.
Highlights include a train ticket from 1918 that Sun used as a bookmark and a book given to him by his son, Sun Ke.
Many of Sun Yat Sen's books were in English, including versions of traditional Chinese masterpieces like Confucius? famous "Analects."
Liu said the exhibition would help people understand how these books influenced the revolutionary and played a role in forming his political philosophy.
The books cover politics, economics, military strategies, agriculture, industry, and social life.
Sun Yat-sen moved into the house on Xiangshan Road with his wife Soong Ching Ling in 1918. He died in 1925. Soong continued to live there until 1937.
