Suspect arrested in slingshot attacks
RESIDENTS in the Zhongshan Road N. area may rest a little easier now that police have arrested a man they believe to be behind a series of slingshot attacks.
The middle-aged bachelor surnamed Gu used steel pellets to fire at his victims, mostly women and usually at their buttocks, from his apartment window, police said. Gu was arrested at his home, near Zhongshan Road N., last Wednesday, police said over the weekend.
Police found about 400 steel pellets and a homemade slingshot at Gu's second-floor apartment, which has a window facing the street. There was also a small hole in the window pane, which he allegedly used to shoot at his targets.
Gu confessed to purchasing the steel pellets.
Police said they were still trying to determine the motive behind the attacks, which are believed to have started in November. At least a dozen people have been hit in the buttocks, face and other areas of the body. No one was injured seriously.
The hunt for the mysterious attacker gathered momentum after media reported the latest attack, a woman surnamed Li who was hit near her right temple on July 15.
Reports of similar attacks rushed in as police canvassed the neighborhood. Police also said they had increased street patrols in the area where Li was attacked since July 15.
