Suspect in attack on bus driver nabbed

THE man who allegedly attacked a female bus driver more than a week ago has been caught, city police said yesterday.

The suspect, surnamed Shen, was seized yesterday morning in the Pudong New Area.

Officers are investigating the case and the 33-year-old suspect will undergo a mental examination, whose results are expected to be released as early as today.

Officers said Shen was nabbed as he rested in front of a convenience store on Boshan Road E. in Pudong.

On May 13, Shen attacked driver Zhou Weiqin as the No. 116 bus did not halt at a scheduled stop in Baoshan District, police said.

The assault, described as brutal, lasted for about three minutes, according to surveillance cameras on the bus.

The suspect left behind a bag as he fled from the bus. The bag contained medicine to treat depression, police said yesterday. The suspect's mother has a history of mental disease, authorities said.

Bus driver Zhou, suffering a broken rib and back injuries, is "still in critical condition" after MRI checks yesterday. With vertebra injuries, Zhou faces the risk of paralysis.
