Suspect in killing of 6 in business dispute put on trial

A 62-year-old man accused of killing six people and injuring four — many of them with a hunting rifle — in Baoshan District on June 22 was put on trial today, Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People’s Court said.

The suspect, surnamed Fan, became violent following a business dispute, police said, and the victims included four of his colleagues, a driver and a barracks guard.

Fan was office director of a local chemical company. He became embroiled in a dispute with his boss, Li Zhizhong, and a colleague surnamed Zhang over a transfer of factory equipment, officials said.

He is accused of bludgeoning Zhang to death with a tool and then going back to his dormitory to grab his hunting rifle. He hailed a cab and killed the driver before driving the taxi back to Baoshan District, authorities said. He is accused of then shooting a guard on the way back to his company and grabbing the guard's gun.

Fan is accused of shooting Li and two other colleagues to death when he arrived.
