Couple on moped survives but seriously injured after heavy crash
AN alleged hit-run driver turned himself in a day after knocking down two mopeds on Saturday morning, causing three injured including two seriously, police said.
Police suspected that the 30-year-old man, surnamed Xu, could have been drunk driving at time of the accident. He allegedly fed the scene after the crashes.
Police said Xu's car ran into bike lane after cutting lanes several times on Changshou Road, in Putuo District and knocked over a male motorist about 8:20am on Saturday. Instead of stopping the car, the driver sped up and only in two minutes, the car made a frontal collision with another moped, causing a couple to be violently thrown out. Their moped was completely torn out.
The husband reportedly suffered multiple bone fractures while his wife reportedly suffered a broken left leg, bruises and lost several teeth.
The woman, surnamed Yu, reportedly told local media that "the white sedan ran towards us like a plane, a bomb. My husband was flown a long distance away. The driver wasn't even seen."
The driver allegedly surrendered himself Sunday evening. Police said their initial investigation showed the driver could have been drunk. The driver is now under arrest.
