Suspects held over dining scam
A GANG of 41 suspects was detained by Shanghai police for alleged wine scams targeting male Internet users, police said today.
Songjiang District police said the gang, led by the main suspect surnamed Li, invited victims to certain restaurants to order sky-high priced food and drinks.
About 120 victims had been scammed by the gang, earning them nearly 1 million yuan (US$146,402) – making it the biggest case of its kind in Shanghai's history, police said.
The gang was well organized and consisted of management teams, girls who met victims, and accountants, police said. Twenty-four suspects were arrested with the approval of the prosecutor's office.
