Sweating workers toil with the AC off

WHITE-COLLAR workers in an office building in the Pudong New Area are enduring the heat this summer because the building's new management company refuses to turn on the air conditioning.

The central cooling system of the Tomson Center on Zhangyang Road has been kept off since November because the management firm says it cannot afford to operate it, said a manager of a trading company in the building surnamed Ren.

"The office was almost like a steam box these days with temperatures of nearly 40 degrees Celsius that has impacted our working efficiencies and had made many clients run away," she said.

Office workers in over 10 companies that rent offices in the building are using electric fans to cool down.

An official of the China Eastern Airlines Property Management Co surnamed Pan said his firm, after taking over management of the building in 2009, determined that the fees collected from tenants were far from enough to pay for air conditioning.

The company paid for the cooling in 2009 and 2010, but can no longer afford the cost this year, said Pan.
