Swindling mom gets life in jail

A WOMAN disguised as multi-millionaire who conspired with her boyfriend to swindle others out of at least 18.2 million yuan (US$2.9 million) and then jumped bail was sentenced to life in prison on Monday, the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People's Court said yesterday.

Lin Jie, in her forties, and her boyfriend Lu Xinyu started committing frauds in May 2008, the court said.

Lu told his coworkers he married a rich woman who had access to high-end gadgets at a cheap price, and stole part of the money they gave him. Three months later, they conned a Wenzhou businessman surnamed Yan.

Police found them and they were taken to court in August 2011. Lin was given bail because she was breast-feeding. But she fled and was detained again on December 3. Lu got 15 years in prison. The couple has two girls, one eight years old, the other 18 months. Officials are working to find caregivers.
