Taiwan Pavilion hopes for private funds

TAIPEI World Trade Center will be responsible for Taiwan Pavilion's exhibition at World Expo 2010.

The Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination has provided a 1,000-square-meter plot for Taiwan Pavilion in the same area as China Pavilion and the Performance Center.

Chih Kang Wang, chairman of the trade center organization, said in Taipei yesterday that it planned to attract NT$1 billion (US$30.7 million) in private funds for the pavilion, according to Taiwan media.

He said five to 10 Taiwan firms, especially those with business on the Chinese mainland, would be invited to sponsor the pavilion.

Wang said the center once planned to rent a pavilion but changed its mind because "Expo Shanghai is expected to be the largest in history."

The pavilion will showcase Taiwan's achievements on technology and environmental protection. The island will also seek business opportunities with the mainland via the pavilion, he added.

Taipei will have two exhibits - a wireless city and a recycling program - in the Urban Best Practices Area.
