Taxi driver earns praise after stopping 2 robbers

A TAXI driver has been widely praised after he helped catch two robbers on Tuesday.

The suspects have been detained for robbing a woman's bag, police said yesterday.

Shi Qinghai, the 31-year-old cabbie, told the Oriental Morning Post he just "did what he should do."

The incident happened in Zhabei District about 1:50am on Tuesday when Shi was about to go home after work. A young woman opened Shi's car door and said the two men across the street robbed her bag.

"I first planned to follow them and call the police, but I lost track of them," Shi told the newspaper. But as fate would have it, Shi turned onto the next block and the robbers flagged down his cab.

He drove calmly until he saw a police patrol car and sped up before stopping beside it.

When Shi got out of the taxi and ran to the police he locked the taxi's back door with the suspects inside.

Shi's family and co-workers did not learn of the story until the police posted it on their microblog and extended their thanks yesterday.
