Teacher seeks apology over profit claim

A UNIVERSITY teacher accused a student of tarnishing her reputation by claiming she had made a profit from organizing a taekwondo training course, a court heard yesterday.

Feng Xiazhen, a physical education teacher at the Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade, said she was given the task of setting up and managing a taekwondo class in 2007. A professional coach was appointed and students paid a fee to attend.

Hu Tiantian, a third-grader who organized a taekwondo club at the university, published an article on the campus Website last May saying Feng had made a profit from running the class.

Feng said she was following the instructions of her department. She handed all the money collected from students to the department. The money was used to pay the coach and buy equipment for the students.

She said her reputation had been harmed and was seeking a written apology and 10,000 yuan (US$1,462).

Hu said he had just discussed the matter with some classmates on his personal message board.

The Songjiang District People's Court didn't announce a verdict after yesterday's hearing.
