Technology to track quality of concrete
SHANGHAI is introducing the RFID technology to better monitor concrete quality and assign responsibility should there be a problem with the building material.
Radio frequency identification technology has been widely used in product tracking systems, especially in the nation's food industry.
Such systems use tags in products with production information that can be scanned and viewed remotely.
"In Shanghai, RFID is used on samples of concrete, the main material for bridges and building, as a mandatory requirement," said Ji Jingqiu, secretary-general of the national RFID association. "The authority will immediately know who is the producer and whether it is the quality of concrete that caused an accident."
Building material quality has been questioned after the collapse of some bridges and other structures around the country.
The city used RFID technology during World Expo 2010 Shanghai to check food sources and investigate food poisoning reports, with good results.
The technology has been used in such products as dairy goods, pork and pharmaceuticals, officials said at the China RFID Technology Development International Conference in Shanghai yesterday.
"RFID technology has been used in over 300 enterprises in 31 provinces and autonomous regions. It is involved in 10 different fields like food safety, manufacturing and auto parts," Ji said. "The nation is working on a product tracking system, which will be put into place in one or two years."
RFID-based cell phone payment and bank cards are being developed, she said. RFID will also be used for tickets, payments and other systems at Disneyland in Shanghai.
