Teen sneaks away to Shanghai Expo

A 14-year-old girl was found by police 24 hours after she sneaked out of her hometown in Guizhou Province to visit Shanghai for the 2010 World Expo.

The girl surnamed Tan was found as soon as she arrived at Bailianjing long-distance bus station in the city's Pudong New Area on Tuesday, the police said. Her parents later flew to Shanghai and brought her back home.

Like many other people in China, Tan was attracted by the splendor of the World Expo, the police said. Tan met a friend on the Internet not long ago and the two planned to visit the Expo together.

Tan secretly planned her trip and slipped onto the bus to Shanghai on Monday morning.

After Tan's parents called the police, Jiang Fuhua, deputy director of the Zhoujiadu Police Station, contacted the driver of Tan's bus and asked him to monitor the girl in secret to ensure her safe arrival in town.

Thanks to the police's immediate reaction, the girl was finally reunited with her parents. Police said Tan almost had no money with her and had planned to find a job in a barbershop to earn the return fare.
