Teenage gang leader jailed

A TEENAGER who helped recruit about 160 fellow gang members over the Internet has been jailed for 14 months for robbery and disturbing social order, according to Changning District People's Court.

Xiao Liang, 18, is one of 12 members of the "Dragon Society" to be caught since authorities began investigating the case earlier this year.

However, his mother told reporters after the verdict that Xiao was a deputy class monitor and a good boy.

"Xiao could still have been an excellent student if he had not met the gang's leader Wang Shen, known as the Crow," she said.

This January, five minors led by a boy surnamed Huang beat and stabbed a boy surnamed Wei outside a school in Luwan District. The victim was stabbed in the back but has since recovered.

Four of the five attackers have been caught. Huang told prosecutors that he was beaten black and blue a week earlier by Wei and his companions. He then contacted the online gang to help him seek revenge.

The four minors were charged with disturbing the peace. All said they belonged to the "Dragon Society" and followed the orders of the group's chief.
