Teenage hit-run motorcyclist caught by cops
LOCAL police have detained an 18-year-old motorcyclist over a hit-and-run in which he allegedly knocked down a girl, critically injuring her, with his illegally modified bike on May 6, officers said yesterday.
The man, surnamed Zhang, was caught on Tuesday at 9am hiding out at the Baiyu Complex on Wuning Road in Putuo District.
Police said they searched for the suspect on local motorcycle modification Internet forums. They discovered his whereabouts from "Mat Rempits," a group of illegal street racing fans.
Zhang had just dropped out of a local vocational school and was good at modifying motorbikes, the police said.
He was also obsessed by motorcycle racing and was an active participant in illegal race meets, which usually took place near the corner of Daduhe Road and Nujiang Road N.
The victim of the hit-and-run, a girl surnamed Lin, was still in critical condition in the intensive care unit of Shanghai No. 6 People's Hospital.
The police said Lin was a student of East China Normal University. She comes from a poor family in Zhejiang Province, so the university is trying to cover part of her medical expenses with the help of the hospital.
Allegedly Zhang, riding his motorcycle at high speed, knocked down Lin on a zebra crossing at the entrance of East China Normal University on Zhongshan Road N. on the afternoon of May 6.
Zhang fled the scene but he was caught on a nearby monitoring camera.
One witness said the modified motorcycle had a very noisy engine and was going fast. He said he couldn't see the rider's face at such speed but was sure that the girl hadn't broken any traffic law.
Putuo police also said more and more young people are participating in illegal street races, and called for schools and parents to address such rebellious behavior.
