Teenager's throat sliced

A 17-YEAR-OLD girl was in critical condition last night in Shanghai's Yangpu District after her throat was cut by a man she refused to date, police said.

The victim, Zhang Yuhong, was in critical condition late last night after her carotid artery was severed, according to doctors at Changhai Hospital where she was being treated.

The suspect, a man in his early 20s, was detained by police, officers said.

The incident happened at about 8pm beside a hotpot restaurant on Minxing Road, near Baotou Road, witnesses said.

"Two men came for her and later took her out," said a waitress, Zhang's colleague, at Xinzhaoxian Restaurant.

Bloodstains were seen at a power transformer station less than 20 meters from the restaurant and it was unclear whether the men were involved in the attack.

Zhang's family was at the hospital last night. Family members said they knew the suspect had been courting Zhang for months.

She had worked in a factory along with the suspect before she quit the job and started working at the restaurant, her family said.

The suspect started courting Zhang when they worked together, however, she always refused his invitations, her family said. Police were still investigating the case.
