Telecom con netted hundreds of phones

A MAN alleged to have conned China Telecom into giving him hundreds of mobile phones and SIM cards worth 1.6 million yuan (US$250,720) went on trial yesterday at Huangpu District People's Court.

Prosecutors said Yang Hong, 33, used former business partners' documents and a fake official seal to sign a cellphone package agreement with China Telecom Shanghai Branch in January.

Under this, he was to receive 500 cellphones and SIM cards. Due to the storage problems, Yang took 332 mobile phones and 450 SIM cards.

He later sold most to clients in Beijing and Wuhan and used the money to pay debts, the court heard.

Yang had planned to pay the monthly fees on the phones out of profits.

He told prosecutors he used fake documents to apply for the discount package because his own company failed to meet the criteria.

Yang was detained on February 1 after China Telecom discovered its complementary phones on sale on the open market and alerted police.

The court did not announce a verdict yesterday.
