A GANG of seven people has been caught stealing charity money from local temples, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported, quoting Jinshan District police.

The ring allegedly stole nearly 20,000 yuan (US$2,930 from six temples in Jinshan, Songjiang and Xuhui districts as well as Pudong New Area by smashing charity donation boxes, police said.

Police were first told of the thefts by Jinshan's Songyin Temple last March, when more than 15,000 yuan was stolen.

Investigations led them to catch a man surnamed Chen, whose confession led to the capture of the other six.
