Thief targets student dormitories for laptops
SHANGHAI police have detained a thief who stole 22 laptop computers from student dormitories across the city last month.
Police received reports of missing laptops valued more than 100,000 yuan (US$15,690) from 22 students in Donghua University, Tongji University and Shanghai Science and Technology University between November 21 and 24. The rampant theft caused big alarm on campus.
Police detectives followed clues to a man surnamed Wei, who was released from prison only in March, and caught him in a hotel on November 24.
Wei confessed that he stole the laptops from dormitories and sold them to buyers in the neighboring Jiangsu Province.
Policemen were sent out to retrieve the laptops in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and even Guangdong provinces and were able to recover 18 of them. The 18 laptops have been returned to their owners.
