Thieves grab hold of cyclists' handbags
POLICE to bicyclists: Hold onto your handbags.
Police have cracked down on a gang that specialized in grabbing property from cyclists on cold winter days.
Three suspects - with motorcycles, stolen cell phones and 3,380 yuan (US$495) in purloined cash - have been caught by Jiading District police.
The police said the gang committed 11 robberies in two days and the targets were all the bags on the left shoulder of female cyclists. The police said the gang worked as a team - two taking charge of the robbery and one blocking the chasing bicycles or vehicles.
About 10:30am on November 8, a woman surnamed Zhao was robbed on Baoxiang Road. The police said a red motorcycle with two suspects passed Zhao and grabbed her bag quickly from behind. Zhao fell on the ground and suffered several bruises.
The same day, two other women in Malu Town were reported robbed in an incident with a red motorcycle.
It was hard to identify the suspects as the crime scenes were all in remote streets with few witnesses.
"Most victims put their cell phones in the bags, which made it hard to call the police after being robbed," the police said yesterday.
Jiading police finally got the images of the suspects after checking cameras on Yunbei Road where another robbery took place last Monday.
