Thieves target airports during busy travel peak
SHANGHAI airports have reported an increase in thefts from passengers' luggage, and police are urging travelers to take extra care with their belongings.
Police did not say how many thefts had been reported by passengers in recent weeks but said thieves were taking advantage of the Spring Festival transport peak, when travelers were in a rush and less alert to losses from their luggage.
In a case on Christmas Day, a passenger reported that HK$100,000 (US$12,896) cash was missing from his carry-on bag. He discovered the loss after his flight from Macau landed at Pudong International Airport.
Airport police scanned information of nearly 100 travelers on the flight and focused on a man from Jiangxi Province, surnamed Cao. With the help of railway police, Cao was tracked to a train that had left Shanghai for Jiangxi Province later that evening. Cao was arrested and police investigations are continuing.
"Many travelers during the current travel rush are in a hurry and don't check their bags until they have left the airport and reached their next destination," an officer with Shanghai Airport police said. "This increases the difficulty for us to spot suspects in time."
The Shanghai Airport Authority said travelers should put hand luggage in overhead lockers and to check the contents when leaving the plane.
