Thieving manager of restaurant gets 2 years

A FORMER manager of a downtown restaurant who canceled customers' paid bills and embezzled over 120,000 yuan (US$19,263) from the cash register was sentenced to two years in prison yesterday by the Huangpu District People's Court.

The man, surnamed Yu, 28, was manager of Jade Cuisine in the ASE Center on Xujiahui Road. Prosecutors said from September 2010 to July 2011, Yu used his manager's card to cancel paid bills totaling nearly 160,000 yuan in the computer and stole an equivalent amount of money as his colleagues were having dinner outside or off work after 10pm.

The court said Yu was convicted for stealing 122,094 yuan because prosecutors failed to provide evidence for some of the bills.

He could have been sentenced to more than five years for embezzling such a large amount of money. The court said it considered that Yu surrendered and returned 160,000 yuan.
