This gang knew when to hold 'em and fold 'em
EIGHT suspects have been caught by Songjiang District police for allegedly cheating card-playing gamblers out of about 300,000 yuan (US$43,946) by using marked decks and special contact lenses.
Police said the gang used special playing cards that looked identical to the genuine article.
However, the face of the cards could be identified from the back by using the contact lenses.
"With this equipment, the suspects could control any card game," police said in a press release yesterday.
The suspects, aged from 19 to 34 and all unemployed, haunted underground casinos, according to police.
They worked as a team of four or five with clear roles, police said, including posing as players, luring victims and making loans.
The group even persuaded some of the debtors to join them, police said.
A suspect surnamed Li was one of the debtors who later became a gang member and cheated many of his friends.
Police urged people not to gamble as, apart from it being illegal, officers had seized many high-tech cheating tools.
Songjiang police will intensify its crackdown on gambling gangs to improve the environment for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.
