Three held over armed raid at store

Three suspects have been detained in connection with an armed robbery at a jewelry store in a hypermarket in the city's Minhang District last week.

The Shanghai Public Security Bureau said the three, two surnamed Zhang and the other surnamed Wang, were caught in Chongqing Municipality and Guizhou Province with the cooperation of Chongqing and Guizhou police.

The suspects were on their way to Shanghai under escort, police said.

Police did not say whether any guns or stolen property had been recovered. Investigations were continuing, said officer Zhuang Liqiang.

The robbery took place about 8:30pm last Wednesday at the Jiujia Jewels store on the first floor of the E-Mart hypermarket on Lianhua Road S. near Yindu Road.

Witnesses said three suspects, wearing masks and armed with guns and knives, smashed counters at the store and made off with most of the gold items on display.

They said the robbery lasted just five minutes and the suspects used a home-made smoke grenade before rushing into the store.
