Three migrant 'heroes' saved 2 women from suicide in river

A WOMAN who tried to commit suicide by jumping into the Huangpu River on Wednesday evening was saved by two men who were praised as heroes. It was the second time in a week that migrant workers saved women trying to drown themselves.

The incident happened about 6pm when the woman, who was not identified, jumped off the Waibaidu Bridge into the Huangpu, witnesses said. The men jumped in without hesitating.

"Had it not been for him, she could have drifted to the middle of the river, where it would be hard for us to save her," said Lin Ken, a squadron officer of a local fire station.

One of the newly minted heroes, surnamed Chen, 45, a migrant worker from Jiangsu Province, did not want to talk too much about his actions while the other man left quietly after the woman was saved.

"I didn't think too much but only wanted to save her," Chen said.

Chen said his family was unaware of what happened. "My family didn't know because I didn't tell them," Chen said. "It doesn't matter. If they knew they would worry. They want me to be safe in the city."

On Saturday, a woman jumped into the Huangpu from the Bund and was saved by a man about 2:50pm. Fu Fabiao, 49, a migrant worker from Zhejiang Province, jumped in and kept her from drowning.
