Three on trial over melamine-tainted milk
THREE executives of local dairy firm Panda are standing trial in Shanghai for producing and selling milk powder and condensed milk tainted with melamine, a potentially dangerous chemical.
Wang Yuechao, Hongqide and Chen Dehua are facing trial at Fengxian District People's Court, Xinmin.cn reported today.
The Shanghai Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision found that a batch of high-calcium milk powder targeted at elderly people exceeded recommended melamine levels of 2.5 milligrams per kilogram.
Bureau officials did not reveal the specific amount of melamine contained in the Panda products.
Further investigations found that the company allegedly reused melamine-tainted condensed milk that had been recalled from the market.
