Three suspects charged with selling expired olive oil

Three suspects have been charged with offering more than 200,000 yuan (US$32,200) worth of expired olive oil for sale today, police in Qingpu District said.

They had replaced the labels on the original bottles with different brands, reprinted the expiration dates and sold the fake bottles all over the internet and other business channels.

Police found 577 bottles of Zucchi, 575 bottles of Andasaludsia, 708 bottles of Ceresados and 69 bottles of fake Agric olive oil from the group earlier this year.

Previously in the first few months of this year, a total of 178 bottles of fake oil had been sold through a shop the group opened on taobao.com, the biggest online shopping website in China. All of the products have been removed from the shop as of Friday afternoon.

However, judging from the ratings and comments under the products, most customers at the shop seemed to be satisfied with the fake products, especially with the fake Ceresados and Agric labels, said the police.

The fake oil products were sold at two-thirds or half of its original market prices, and lab test results show that they had no quality defects, police told Shanghai Daily.

In October last year, the suspect, surnamed Hong, and another, surnamed Yao, started to purchase olive oil, that had expired for one or two months, from an importer in Shanghai.

Meanwhile, Yao’s wife, surnamed Zhang, is on bail because she is pregnant said the police. Nevertheless, Hong and Yao have been taken into custody.

Furthermore, police said that they have solved 109 criminal cases involving food safety so far this year where 219 suspects were caught.

Recently, a man surnamed Yang has been arrested in the Fengxian District for poisoning a dozen stray dogs with cyanide from November last year to February this year. After poisoning the dogs, he would sell the meat of the slaughtered dogs to three local restaurants. The owners of the restaurants, who confessed to be aware of the scheme, were also arrested.
