Today the coldest day of this winter

THE mercury plummeted to the bottom of this winter in Shanghai today as the suburban Chongming Island recorded the lowest of minus six degrees.

But the temperature will start to rebound from tomorrow, according to Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

Meanwhile, the city’s air quality was good today with Air Quality Index being around 98, indicating a fair level. But it is expected to become slightly polluted next morning, the city’s air quality watchdog said.

Lakes and rivers in the downtown areas remained frozen at 10am today with temperature drops to minus 0.6 degrees Celsius in downtown Xujiahui area, the lowest temperature in the city this winter.

City outskirts saw the temperatures around minus four degrees with Chongming became the coldest area in the city today.

However, with the sunshine and mild wind, temperature slowly bounced back to make local residents feel a bit warmer.

The city’s temperature will climb up to fluctuate between two and 10 degrees tomorrow, said Kong Chunyan, the bureau's chief forecaster.

Cloudy weather will be lingering across the city over the weekend with the highest reaching 15 degrees, Kong said.

Some small rainfall will come to the city from early next week, she added.
