Tot, 2 adults die crossing highway
A BOY thought to be one year old and two adults were killed crossing an expressway when they were hit by a car about 6:35pm yesterday in suburban Jiading District, police said.
The deaths occurred on the Shanghai-Nanjing expressway when the boy, a man and a woman were struck by a car.
"What a poor child," said a witness, surnamed Xue, who was driving by after the accident. Xue said he saw the bodies lying on the ground and called a local traffic radio station. The fatal crash was near an expressway ramp in Jiading. It was not clear why they were crossing the expressway. Police were continuing to investigate.
Witnesses said the boy appeared to be about one year old.
Xue said the child wore yellow trousers. He said traffic was held up for a few minutes after the fatalities.
Traffic police said the expressways got busier over the weekend as locals went out for traditional tomb-sweeping in the winter season. Yesterday's rain also added to congestion and several minor rear-end collisions worsened the situation, police said.
There have been more than 200 crashes involving pedestrians that have killed about 60 people this year, police said. Traffic police say they have punished more than 350,000 jaywalkers this year but the violations nevertheless remain common.
