Tough rules see dump truck firm closed
A LOCAL dump truck business was closed down yesterday after its drivers were found responsible for traffic accidents in which three people died.
This is the first time a waste disposal company has been permanently shut down as a result of accidents involving its drivers, said officials from the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau.
Shanghai Huhuan Waste Cleansing Service Co had its business license revoked after one of its vehicles was involved in an accident in Putuo District on April 2 in which two people died, and another in the Pudong New Area on May 12 that left one person dead.
Police investigations found that major or full responsibility fell on the drivers.
Under city regulations that came into force this year to tighten supervision of the industry, a dumping company will lose its business license if its drivers are found to be mainly or fully responsible for accidents which claim a total of three lives.
Previously, dump truck companies merely paid compensation to accident victims or their families, while drivers shouldered the legal responsibility if traffic laws were violated in the accidents.
"The new rules regulate dumping companies' performance and improve self-discipline," said Liu Weiguang from the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau.
"Construction waste dumping is a lucrative business. Companies won't take risks for fear of losing their licenses," added Liu.
According to local traffic police, in the first half of this year dump trucks were involved nine traffic accidents in which drivers took major or full responsibility.
Eleven people died in these accidents.
Eight construction truck drivers were sacked in the first quarter of this year for being responsible for fatal traffic accidents.
