Training for 1,200 carers of elderly
SHANGHAI yesterday launched a training scheme for 1,200 care workers for seniors to improve skills in the sector and tackle an acute staff shortage.
Officials with the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau said this would be the first batch of trainees and hoped the initiative will help improve staff retention.
The bureau said it would also improve social security status and career development for care workers.
At present, many workers in the senior care industry are domestic helpers with no specialist knowledge of how to take care of the elderly, officials said.
Shanghai has an aging population, with the number of residents aged over 60 reaching 3.88 million last year, up 5.5 percent from 2012.
While the city has around 54,000 workers in the senior care field, demand far exceeds supply, the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau said.
Among them, 24,000 work at senior homes, while the remainder are at residential communities. This figure does not include ayi employed privately to take care of elderly people.
