Transformer blaze cuts electricity to thousands
THOUSANDS of people in at least four neighborhoods, two schools and a nursing home in the Pudong New Area were left without electricity for hours yesterday after a power transformer substation exploded and caught fire.
Power was restored by late yesterday, said the local power supplier. At 1:24pm yesterday, smoke was seen billowing from the substation on Xindexi Road in Chuansha Town. People nearby reported hearing a loud noise before electricity went out. No injuries or deaths were reported and the fire was quickly extinguished.
Also yesterday, the death toll from an attack on Friday in the city's Baoshan District in which one co-worker set the other afire grew from two to three.
The man who set the fire, Chen Dengxiao, in his 50s, died in the fire, as did another worker, Liu Songwei. After fighting with a worker named Zhang Yongqing, Chen set Zhang on fire.
Zhang died yesterday.
