Trip home that ended in tragedy
The death toll in Wednesday night's bus crash in Shanghai rose to 11 yesterday after an injured passenger died in hospital, the city's health bureau said yesterday.
There were 24 people on board, including the 49-year-old driver, Yan Fuwen, when the bus collided with a minibus and crashed into railings on the Outer Ring Road.
One of the 13 survivors was still in a critical condition last night.
The Inventec (Shanghai) Corp shuttle bus was bringing employees back from work, the Taiwan-based company said yesterday.
Police said that, according to their preliminary investigation, the crash was caused by the minibus suddenly cutting in. The bus first rear-ended the minibus, then lost control and crashed into railings at the side of the highway.
The driver of the minibus is helping police with their investigation.
The accident happened at 8:54pm on the Outer Ring Road between Longdong Avenue and Jinhai Road. The minibus cut into the left lane of the four-lane highway and the bus hit the minibus and lost control, said a spokesman for Shanghai Bei'ao Transport Co, Inventec's shuttle bus service provider.
The bus made an abrupt turn to the right and crashed onto railings on the right edge of the highway. Some of the passengers were thrown out of the bus and were crushed between the bus and the railings, witnesses said.
Inventec, a major laptop and server manufacturer, said 18 of the 23 employees on board were working for Inventec while the other five were employees of TPV-Inventa Technology Co Ltd, another Taiwan-based electronic company affiliated to Inventec. Most were in their 20s, and the youngest was just 17, said an Inventec official surnamed Chen.
Chen said the bus was taking the employees, including operators, technical specialists and production workers, back to the company in Minhang District, from its client in the Pudong New Area.
