Truck crash kills girl
A NINE-YEAR-OLD girl surnamed Lu was killed yesterday when a cement mixer crashed into the moped her grandfather was driving in Minhang District.
The child's grandfather surnamed Feng and Lu's classmate Zhu Yi, who was also on the moped, were injured. Both are in hospital in a stable condition.
Police took the truck driver into custody.
The accident was the latest involving trucks after six municipal government departments agreed last Friday to launch another citywide campaign against construction vehicle drivers who speed or exceed load limits.
A moped driver was killed by a truck on Saturday.
In yesterday's accident, the girl's grandfather picked up the two girls from an elementary school on Jingcai Road. As they made their way home, a cement mixer hit the moped, crushing one girl to death, a witness said.
Construction vehicles have been linked to at least 14 deaths since November.
Nine children, aged between three and 12, were injured between July and November, all victims of accidents involving heavy trucks.
Some children have debilitating conditions that could disable them for life, doctors said.
With the crackdown on trucks ongoing, some construction and truck companies are offering drivers a fixed wage of 3,000 yuan (US$439) per month to prevent them from overloading vehicles.
Drivers usually earn extra pay if they transport more materials or waste.
