Truck drivers sacked over accidents

EIGHT construction truck drivers were sacked after killing nine people in eight different traffic accidents in the first quarter of this year, officials from the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau said yesterday.

It's the first time such drivers were fired for causing fatal accidents, the bureau said. They also will not be allowed to take jobs as construction truck drivers at other companies in the city as punishment, the bureau added.

Compensation and legal responsibility regarding the accidents were handled separately by traffic police.

Officials said the mortality rate from these accidents was higher than in the first three months of last year, but did not release more detailed figures.

Shanghai Baishun Dirt and Debris Dumping Co was fined 10,000 yuan (US$1,538) for not reporting how much dirt it transported, a must for dumping companies. It became the first company to be fined this year. One of its dump trucks killed a cyclist in an accident in Minhang District on February 17.
