Truck load clips electrical wire

A truck with its goods loaded high broke a wire in the downtown area yesterday, cutting the power supply and injuring a passer-by.

The incident happened about 11:20am as the truck was driven on Jiangning Road in Putuo District, police said. When the truck turned onto Putuo Road, the top of the cargo hit the wires above. An electric bus stopped operation when the power failed. Another vehicle's window was hit and broken by the falling wires, police said.

About 30 meters of loose wire was on the ground, causing an old woman to stumble. The woman, who suffered injuries to her mouth and nose, was sent to a nearby hospital where she was reported in stable condition.

Power was restored by noon after emergency workers responded. The bus company called other vehicles to transport the stranded passengers.

The cargo onboard the truck, mostly waste such as empty water bottles and plastic items, piled about four meters high.

"The goods were too high," said police.

Traffic police said the height limits for trucks vary on different streets, tunnels, bridges and elevated roads. Usually the limit is about 4.5 meters.
