Truck-bus collision kills one, injures 30

ONE passenger was killed and 30 others injured in a bus-truck collision yesterday on Shanghai's Chongming Island, city authorities said.

Five among the injured were in critical condition but were considered out of danger, traffic authorities said.

The crash happened at 1:12pm on a highway on the island, in northeast part of the city, police said. The Nanbu line bus crashed into a greenery area after being hit by a truck that ran a red light, said the bus operator, Shanghai Chongming Bashi Co.

The truck driver, surnamed Huang, 45, is under police investigation.

"It made a sudden turn to avoid the further crash and ran over the road shoulder and landed on a grassland close to a creek," said a Chongming traffic police officer, after initial investigation.

A witness who declined to be named said both vehicles were "driving fast," a fact not confirmed by the traffic police.

The head of the bus was severely damaged. One passenger onboard the bus died at the scene, police said. The injured, including the truck driver, were sent to an island hospital for treatment.

A female passenger who suffered massive bleeding to her leg and head was carried by a police helicopter to downtown Ruijin Hospital for treatment, said the hospital. She was undergoing surgery and remained in critical condition.

Meanwhile, police said yesterday the police chopper also carried an injured Russian cyclist from Chongming to downtown Huashan Hospital. The UCI Women's Road World Cup 2012 and the Tour of Chongming Island 2012 are being held on Chongming these days. The cyclist broke her right arm in a crash with other cyclists.
