Trucks in emergency operation to press down downtown bridge floated in rainstorm

CITY roads are flooded this morning as heavy downpour continues to pound the city with the Hongkou and Jiading districts among the most severely hit.

The Tongzhou Road Bridge in Hongkou's Shajinggang area floated due to flooding and heavy downpour, posing safety hazards, and the district government is using two 10-ton trucks to press down it.

Water of the Hongkou District river course almost overflowed although a sluice has just been put into operation, ThePaper.cn reported.

The sluice that connects waterways in Hongkou with the Huangpu River opens for business on Monday. The structure is designed to relieve the water pollution that has long been a problem for people living in the area, Xinhua reported.

In addition, part of the Sichuan Road N. between the Haining Road and Qiujiang Road in Hongkou had a flooding of 30 to 50 centimeters. Some houses along the Changchun Branch Road were flooded this morning.

Some sedans had half of their car bodies flooded in Dongtiyuhui Road and Ganhe Road in the district.

The bridge arches of some roads including Jiasong Rd N. and Jinchang Road as well as Chenjiashan Road in Jiading District have been closed for safety reasons.

The drainage system in most areas in Shanghai can fend off a precipitation of 36mm per hour, but the rainfall last night and this morning turned out too strong, leading to flooding in some areas, the city's flooding control authorities said.

All outdoor amusement facilities in Shanghai Happy Valley have been suspended, and the Chenshan Botanical Garden is using pipes to drain away water.
