Twins puzzle in fake invoices scandal
CITY prosecutors have detained more than 20 people in a false value-added-tax invoice scam worth 310 million yuan (US$45.3 million), officials said yesterday.
Zhabei District police caught the suspects after a six-month probe.
They had received reports that a man named Chen Kangtao was helping others obtain false VAT invoices in March last year.
But he claimed to be his innocent twin brother when police called at his house in Chuansha Town of Pudong New Area. His brother in Hongkou District, meanwhile, told police he was also not the man they were looking for.
That puzzled officers for a while until they found Chen Kangtao's wife at the house in Chuansha. Chen tried to tell them it was common for the brothers to exchange wives.
But police arranged for the two brothers to meet at the police station. It was then the suspect had to admit he always pretended to be his brother. Chen then admitted to police he was doing business with a man named Wu Ming.
When police caught up with Wu, he admitted that he had many companies engaged in writing false tax invoices for others.
Also involved was the wife of a company boss who had died years before. The wife, Li Fen, had been writing false invoices worth 200 million yuan, police said.
In all, police said, the case involved more than 1,000 companies in more than 20 provinces.
