Two children found drowned in creek, stepdad commits suicide
SHANGHAI police said last night they were investigating the deaths of a boy and girl after they were found drowned in a creek in suburban Minhang District yesterday morning.
The brother and sister, six and three years old, respectively, were last seen being taken from their home by their stepfather, surnamed Pan, on Tuesday. Pan later killed himself by jumping off a hospital building the next morning, district police said last night.
Few details were disclosed by the police and they were still investigating the connection between Pan and the deaths of his stepchildren. But Pan's neighbors told reporters that the migrant carpenter murdered his stepchildren.
Pan took his stepson and stepdaughter to Ledao Creek near Longwu Road and the three wandered there for a while near Pan's electric bicycle, neighbors said. They believed Pan threw the two children into the water.
The story was in line with the police's statement last night, in which it said Pan took the children out Tuesday afternoon and later came back home alone, refusing to disclose the whereabouts of the children to his wife, surnamed Hu, and neighbors.
After coming back home, Pan attempted suicide in multiple ways by drinking pesticide, slitting his wrists and turning on gas. The gas smell alerted neighbors, and one neighbor surnamed Xiong broke into Pan's home at Tangwan Village and saved the man in his 30s.
Pan was later rushed to the hospital but jumped off the building about 6am on Wednesday, police said.
