Two die in hospital as feud gangs rounded up
A MAN shot in a gun fight in Shanghai's Putuo District died in hospital yesterday, while police said another man shot in the debt dispute row had died by the time 11 suspects were caught.
One of the victims, an unidentified man who was shot in the forehead, died in Huadong Hospital at 10:43am yesterday. Doctors said the man sustained fatal injuries from two bullets to the head near his left eye.
The other seriously wounded man died of gunshot wounds in another hospital on Friday night after fleeing the scene, police said. Two others who were slightly injured were being treated in the hospital, they added.
Police said yesterday that the incident on Friday afternoon began with an argument over a disputed debt, then escalated to a knife fight and shooting with home-made guns.
All 11 main suspects who fled the shooting scene were detained by police, with four home-made guns, one knife and two vehicles involved in the case seized, the police reported yesterday.
Gunshots rang out at about 12:30pm on Friday at the entrance of Huili Garden, a residential development on Changshou Road.
Several witnesses said after a verbal dispute between a gang of four or five and another man, about 30 years old, the gang beat the man and stabbed him with a small knife.
The shooter, believed to be a companion of the stabbing victim, jumped out of a white minibus and fired three shots from a pistol. Two victims were injured, with one managing to escape and the other going to Huadong Hospital.
Police said the suspects' escape route was soon traced through evidence gained by investigators at the scene.
Eyewitnesses said the shooting party, along with the stabbed man, fled the neighborhood in the minibus bearing a Jiangsu Province plate, while the other gang scattered into the residential area.
Two suspects were detained about 6pm in Shanghai's Long-distance Bus Station in Zhabei District, police said. Others were caught later on Caobao and Dushi roads in Minhang District and on Rongle Road E. in Songjiang District near midnight.
Shanghai's last street shooting incident occurred in July 2002 with two injuries.
