Two injured in gas blast

A MAN and a woman were injured in a gas explosion in a residential community in Huangpu District at lunchtime yesterday.

The two, both in their 30s, were sent to Ruijin Hospital where the man was being treated for second-degree burns on his face and the woman for slight injuries to her hands and legs.

The incident happened at about 12:40pm in a 10th-floor apartment of Building 7 in the Jinkaihuayuan residential community on Xizang Road S.

The windows of room 1001 were smashed and two cars parked below damaged by broken glass.

"I ran out of my department as quickly as possible after hearing a big bang," said a woman living in the building.

She said the injured were not local citizens and they rented the apartment with two other people.

The man and the woman quarreled a lot recently, said one resident who asked not to be named. The woman even threatened to commit suicide by jumping out of the window, the resident added.

It is not clear whether the two, who have not been named, were husband and wife.

The local gas company said the cooker was turned on when the incident occurred but nothing was cooking.

The cause of the blast is still under investigation.
