Two missing after bridge collapse
A BRIDGE crossing an inland river in the Pudong New Area collapsed after a garbage barge crashed into its pier in this morning, city government officials said.
Two crew members are still missing after they fell into the water when the vessel sank. Three others were saved, officials said.
The vessel, from Shanghai Environment Logistics Co Ltd, lost control and crashed into the bridge across Pudong New Area's (the original Nanhui District) Dazhi River at 12:13am, the government said.
Onboard were 16 containers carrying city household waste. The barge was headed for a waste disposal landfill near the East China Sea, said local maritime officials.
Maritime safety authorities enacted traffic control on the waters from 1am. By 7am ships and vessels could pass though the area under convoy.
The government is still investigating the crash.
