Two missing after ship crashes into bridge

TWO crewmen are missing after a garbage ship crashed into a bridge pile in Shanghai's southeast Nanhui District at daybreak today, collapsing the bridge.

The 50-meter long bridge deck collapsed in the crash, fell on the ship and wrecked it. Three crew members managed to escape the accident. Rescuers are searching for two still missing.

It is possible that there were pedestrians on the bridge when it collapsed, said an official with the rescue team quoted by Xinmin.cn.

The 250-meter long bridge is now stable and in no danger of further collapse, the report said. The river is used to transport the city's garbage, and seven garbage containers were still floating in the river.

Crash witness Song said he thought it was an earthquake when he heard a big bang and his apartment shook. He called police soon after he saw the bridge had collapsed and people were calling for help in the water.

Environmental authorities were also at scene testing the water quality because the crash happened beside a garbage dock.
