Two-month-old girl whose heart beat nearly twice as quick as healthy peers cured at city hospital

A 2-month-old girl with extremely quick heartbeat received radiofrequency ablation treatment and was discharged from the hospital today, setting the record of the youngest patient in the nation to successfully go through such therapy.

The girl, identified as Juanzi, was found with very quick heartbeats ten days after birth. During the worst period, her heart beat rate reaches 280 times per minute, almost doubling that of healthy children whose heart  beats usually stays below 150 times every minute. The heart problem caused her to look pale and suffer a poor mental status.

The hospital has already set a record after treating a 13-month-old boy late last year with this therapy. Juanzi’s even younger age in this case is a bigger challenge to all medical staff, as her heart is only about the same of a pigeon egg and there is no special surgery tool to fit well for such a small baby at present.

Doctors gave up the traditional use of three electrodes during the surgery. Only through one electrode, doctors found the place with abnormal electrical pathway and blocked it. The girl’s heartbeats turned normal soon after.
