Typhoon to bring heavy rain, winds
Typhoon Bavi, the eighth this year, will bring strong winds and heavy rain to Shanghai today.
It formed near Taiwan on Saturday and is moving northwest, according to the city’s weather bureau, with winds strengthening.
From tonight to tomorrow, winds in the local coastal area are expected to be 62 to 74 kilometers per hour, strong enough to blow down branches.
They are expected to hit 117 kph to 134 kph offshore.
There will be thunder showers in the city and some areas will see heavy rainfall.
But the long run of days of highs of 35 degrees Celsius and above will end tomorrow.
A yellow heat alert, the third highest in a four-tier system, was issued by the authority at 10:22am yesterday with a temperature of 36.2 degrees recorded at the benchmark Xujiahui weather station in Xuhui District.
Today’s high is forecast at 36 degrees.
That is expected to fall to 32 degrees from Thursday.
