Typhoon triggers blue alert for gales
The city’s meteorological bureau issued a blue alert, the lowest in a four-tier system, for gales at 5pm yesterday due to Typhoon Bavi.
Bavi, the eighth typhoon this year, formed near Taiwan on Saturday and has a maximum wind force of 151.2 kilometers per hour. It is moving northwest and its wind strength is increasing, the bureau said.
It reached the same latitude as Shanghai at midnight, 250-300km from the city. The wind force in local coastal areas is expected to be 62kph to 74kph, strong enough to blow down branches.
There will be thunderstorms or showers in the city’s western areas during this period. Due to the effects of Bavi, there may be thunder showers throughout the week with temperatures on the decline.
The bureau issued a yellow heat alert, the third highest, at 10:25am yesterday. A temperature of 36.9 degrees Celsius was recorded at the benchmark Xujiahui meteorological center in Xuhui District.
It is expected to be this month’s last heat alert. Temperatures will fall from 34 degrees today to 31 degrees on Friday.
Although they will rise over the weekend they won’t exceed 33 degrees, forecasters said.
