Unlicensed cabbie steals luggage

THE city's traffic watchdog is searching for an unlicensed taxi driver who stole a passenger's luggage at Shanghai South Railway Station on January 9.

The passenger, surnamed Ren, complained to a traffic enforcement team "most of his luggage was stolen and he had to embark on a cold, sad journey back to his hometown for the Spring Festival."

Ren, a university student who studies in the city, took a taxi to Shanghai South Railway Station that night.

After arriving at the station, Ren exited the vehicle and was about to take his two suitcases from the back seat. But the cab suddenly sped up and drove off. Unable to catch the taxi, Ren decided to board his train and head home.

Traffic law enforcement team officials said the driver used a fake taxi plate number. They added that checks will be enhanced to trace the taxi, which is believed to be a cloned cab.

Wu Runyuan, a team spokesman, said it's hard to catch illegal drivers as they can "play lots of tricks to avoid detection."
