Unmarried couple sells baby boy
AN unwed couple has been caught selling their 10-month-old baby to a neighbor, police said yesterday.
The man, Zhang Min, 21, was detained along with his neighbor, Wu Kaixiang, police said.
The girl, surnamed Ye, 17, was not subject to detention as she is still a minor, police said.
Police said Zhang and Ye, both migrant workers, earned a hard life in the city and "could not afford to raise the boy."
Police said at first they claimed the baby was missing.
On July 23, police in Putuo District received a phone call saying a baby went missing around 2am in a residential community on Zhennan Road.
However, police became suspicious when the couple gave contradictory statements.
"They seemed like they were trying to hide something from us," police said.
The couple soon admitted that they sold their baby boy to a neighbor for 46,000 yuan (US$6,789).
Zhang had called his uncle and told him the baby was missing so that his family wouldn't find out. The uncle then alerted police.
Investigation is underway.
