Vendor held after stabbing

AN urban management assistant was stabbed to death in Hongkou District during an argument with a street vendor, police confirmed yesterday.

The suspect, a middle-aged vendor surnamed Zhang, was caught at the scene.

The incident happened about 7pm on Sunday at the Hongkou Football Stadium station of Metro Line 8.

Zhang was found setting up an illegal stall at the station's No. 2 Exit while Qu and a colleague from the district's urban management supervision team were patrolling the area.

Unwilling to move his wallet stall, Zhang argued with the two and this turned from a wrangle to "physical contact," the district government said yesterday.

Police said Zhang pulled out a knife and stabbed Qu in the chest.

"He fell immediately and couldn't move though there was not much blood," said a nearby shopkeeper.

Qu, 39, was pronounced dead after an ambulance arrived.
